At the end of this chapter, students should be able to:
- List plant nutrient elements under the major classes
- Recognize deficiency symptoms of different elements in crops
- State the factors affecting nutrient availability in the soil
- Describe the different methods of replenishing lost nutrients
- Illustrate the different nutrient cycles using diagrams
MACRO-NUTRIENTS AND MICRO-NUTRIENTS
Plants require nutrients or elements obtained from soil for good growth and healthy development. These elements or nutrients are classified into two main groups which are:
Macro-Nutrients
Macro-Nutrients are mineral elements or nutrients required by crops in large quantities. Examples of macronutrients are nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, calcium and Sulphur.
