Chemical reactions 1

CHEMISTRY  SSS2  First Term

WEEK 3

Chemical reactions 1

Performance objectives

Students should be able to:

  1. Identify reactants and products of any reaction
  2. Explain collision theory with respect to reaction time and reaction rate.
  3. List and explain at least three factors that affect the rate of chemical reactions

Content

Rate of chemical reaction

The rate of a chemical reaction is the amount of moles of reactant converted or products formed per unit time i.e.

Rate of reaction= change in concentration of reactant or product

                                 Time taken for the change

In a reaction like

Zn(s) + 2HCl (aq) ------à ZnCl (aq) + H2 (g)
