Types of Popular Participation

1. Political popular participation

This is the form of popular participation which presides over political activities like elections. Here the people's votes count as they come out en masse to play their active roles in the political affairs of their state by belonging to or joining political parties of their choice and participate in governance. Examples of political parties are PDP, ACN, ANPP, etc.

2. Economic popular participation

This is the form of popular participation which presides over the economic activities of a state like ownership and establishment of public economic firms, eg PHCN, etc. The funds for popular participation in economic participation are the trade unions; like NNPC, OPEC, chambers of commerce. The people either own or join in the participation of their country.

3. Social popular participation

This form of popular participation comprises professional occupations like FAN, NUT, NUJ, student union (SU). pressure group, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), etc. In this kind of popular participation, people's interests are presented either through protests, rallies, boycotts, etc. There are also religious popular participation through churches, mosques, etc.
