Acids

An acid is a substance which when dissolved in water produces hydrogen ions, as the only positive ions. e.g.

HCl H+ + Cl-

HNO3 ⇌ H+ + NO3

This process is known as ionization. The characteristic properties of acid are due to the presence of these hydrogen ions.

Acids are classified as organic and inorganic acids. Organic are natural products from plants and animals e.g tartaric acid from grape, lactic acid from milk,…
