Gas laws 3

CHEMISTRY  SSS1 Second Term

WEEK 8

Gas laws 3

Performance Objectives

The student should be able to:

  1. State Graham’s law of diffusion
  2. Solve calculations on Graham’s law of diffusion
  3. Define Avogadro’s number, molar gas volume, and mole concepts

Content

Graham’s law of diffusion

Graham law of diffusion states that at a constant temperature and pressure, the rate of diffusion of a gas is inversely proportional to the square root of its density or molar mass, i.e.

R1/R2 = (M2/M1)1/2

Where:

M1 = Molar mass of gas X

R1 = Rate of diffusion of gas X
