Woodwork hand tools

Hand tools are tools operated manually without electricity e.g. cutlass axe, digger, hoe etc.

Woodwork hand tools are grouped according to the function they performed. Measuring tools, setting and marking out tools, boring tools, driving tools, holding out devices and cutting tools

Measuring tools

These are hand tools used to measure length, width and height of an object. Examples are

Setting and marking out tools

These are hand tools used for setting and marking out the shapes of a particular wood before cutting the wood. They include

Compass

Try square

Trammel

Driving or impelling tools

These are hand tools used for pushing or striking nails, pulling or driving out screws, bolts and pins into position in wood. Hammers, screwdrivers, punches, mallets are examples of driving tools

Wood holding devices

These are the tools for supporting the workpiece firmly on a workbench or on a machine tool in order to have a successful operation. They are classified into two groups which are

1. The stationary type which is usually fitted to the workbench e.g. vices
2. The portable type which are usually held in hand when in use e.g. clamps or cramps
