CHEMISTRY SSS2 Third Term

WEEK 9

Alkanols 1

Performance objectives

Students should be able to:

  1. State the types of Alkanols with examples.
  2. Explain the laboratory preparation of Alkanols.
  3. Explain the industrial preparation of Alkanols by fermentation process.
  4. Explain at least three physical properties of Alkanols.

Content

Alkanols (alcohols)

Alkanols are organic molecules containing only carbon (C), hydrogen (H), and oxygen (O) atoms.

Alkanols belong to the group of organic compounds known as alcohol.

Alcohols are hydroxyl compounds, they contain an OH, hydroxy (or hydroxyl), functional group.

Alkanols consist of an alkane that contains a hydroxyl (OH) group. The molecular formula of alkanol is CnHn + 1OH and ROH for alcohol.
