Oxidation and Reduction

Oxidation and reduction in terms of oxygen transfer

  • Oxidation is the gain of oxygen.
  • Reduction is the loss of oxygen.
  • For example, in the extraction of iron from its ore:

Fe2O3 + 3CO ----à 2Fe + 3CO2

Fe2O3 ----à 2Fe   ------à Reduction

3CO -------à 3C02 ------à Oxidation

Because both reduction and oxidation are occurring simultaneously, this is known as a redox reaction.

  • Reduction is the gain of hydrogen.
