Content

Oxidizing and reducing agents

  • Oxidizing agents give oxygen to another substance.
  • Reducing agents remove oxygen from another substance.

For example the extraction of iron from its ore

Fe2O3 + 3CO ----à 2Fe + 3CO2

Fe2O3 ----à 2Fe   oxidizing agent

3CO -------à 3C02 reducing agent
