WEEK 10

Variance of the different probability Distributions

Performance Objectives

Students should be able to:

  1. Define the mean of different probability distributions.
  2. Define the variance of different probability distributions.
  3. Define the coefficient of variance of different probability distributions.

Content

Probability Distribution Functions

Probability distribution functions can broadly be categorized into two namely;

1. Discrete probability distribution function

2. Continuous probability distribution function

Discrete Probability Distribution

Examples of discrete probability distribution are;

a. Binomial Distribution

b. Poisson distribution

Continuous Probability Distribution

An example of continuous probability distribution function is the normal distribution. It includes the mean, variance, standard deviation and coefficient of variance.

Expected Value of a Random Experiment

Consider the game of throwing a die.…
