French is a language spoken by French people in French countries, it is their official language. French is an art of communication with other people.

L’IMPORTANCE DE LA LANGUE FRANCAISE AU NIGERIA /THE IMPORTANCE OF FRENCH LANGUAGE IN NIGERIA

The teaching of the French language in Nigerian schools is a desirable addition to the school curriculum because:

1. The geographical location of Nigeria: Nigeria is immediately surrounded by African French-speaking countries such as La Republique du Benin, Le Togo, Le Niger, Le Cameroun, Le Tchad For Nigerians to be able to do business with these countries successfully, there is a need for the knowledge of French.  
2. French responds to the need for political, social and economic integration in the West African Sub-region.
3. French is the second International language used in such organizations as ONU, FIFA, OIF, UNESCO, UA, ECOWAS and many more. Nigeria belongs to these organizations hence, the need for French knowledge
4. One can earn a living by working as a translator, interpreter, bilingual secretary in companies, embassies, and international organizations. Also as an educator/teacher in schools.
