Family Goals
Goals are things that family or individual strive to accomplish/achieve. There are long term, short term and intermediate goals.
Standards
Standards are measures of quality, quantity and method of goal attainment. Standard influence actions because of satisfaction derived from it. There are flexible, fixed and content standards.
Standards are related to specific materials. It is influenced by external factors. Standards are set limits one will accept in working toward a goal. Standards are mental pictures of what is considered essential and necessary to make life satisfying.
EXAMPLES OF FAMILY GOALS AND STANDARDS
- Maintain Mutual Respect
One of the causes of conflict in the home is the lack of respect for one another. Mutual respect is described as “speaking to one another in a respectful and considerate fashion, keeping your partner in mind when making decisions, and responding to your partner’s needs and wants.”
- Raise Responsible, Productive, and Happy Children
Raising responsible children doesn’t just happen by chance. Parents with grown-up children know this. You have the chance the plan how responsible, productive, and happy you want your children to be.
- Have an Active Religious Life
If you follow a religion, religious devotion can play a key role in marriages. On one side, it can help you to maintain spiritual and moral uprightness; on another, it helps you belong to a community of people where your family can also get external support and encouragement.
- Generate Sufficient Finances
There is a cliché that says money is the sugar in the tea of marriage. While that can be a subject of debate, the truth is that a lack of sufficient funds in the family can create stress and tension. Therefore, setting a goal to generate adequate funding for your family needs is a goal worth pursuing.
- Have and Run a Family Financial Plan
You have to create a long term financial plan for your family. This includes considering saving plans, investment plans, child education plans, etc
- Deal With Conflict Maturely
You can’t avoid conflicts or misunderstandings in the family, but you can determine to deal with them decisively and maturely. Setting a workable pattern for conflict resolution is a goal you should consider.
- Grow Up and Old Together (Longevity)
The primary purpose of marriage is companionship, and one of the ways to maximize this is to live a long time together. Plan the things under your own control to live long together, such as reducing stress, living happily, eating healthy, and exercising
- Maintain Open and Productive Communication
Encourage open and productive communication in your family. If possible, have a day each week for “tell it all” where each family member will communicate their desires, pains, and opinion about happenings in the family and the direction the family is headed.
- Create Family Values, a Vision, and a Mission
Visions, missions, and core values are not only good for individuals or corporate organizations, but they are also applicable to the family as well. Have some values and mission distinctive to the family and something you are all working towards together.
- Encourage and Provide Top-level Education
You can make it your goal to support your family members with funds to attain the highest level of education possible. This will take thinking outside the box to generate sufficient income.
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NEEDS, GOALS AND STANDARDS
We can say that goals are set on the basis of different value (patterns) of an individual or family members. At the same time goals also have a relationship to standards and needs. Because the family held values needs and standards to develop. They have an influence on each other. If one needs efficiency, one of his/her goals would be to have a well laid out kitchen based on the functional standards and also based on research on space requirements, equipment and layout. The same way, if one needs good health, his/her goals would be taking more nutritive food and engage in physical exercise which is again dictated by scientific standards of nutritional requirements:-quantitative and qualitative, as well as the set standards of exercise according to the prescription by medical practitioners appropriate to age and sex specifications.
USES OF FAMILY NEEDS, GOALS AND STANDARDS HELP IN FAMILY RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
- They help and strengthen family plans and strategies.
- They help the family in building and making positive future plans.
- They help to minimize the shortage of food or financial services.
- They are the foundation for an organized family lifestyle.
- They help to reduce extravagance and extra spendings.
Hence, management in the home is a dynamic force in day to day living and is the administrative side of family living. The steps in the management process are interdependent and interrelated for efficient, effective and dynamic use of resources which leads to the proper management of the house, whereby goals are achieved to attain maximum satisfaction.
