Why do snails move slowly
Long ago, there was no rain and so the grass did not grow. The animals were all hungry. Some could eat other animals, but snails could only eat grass. They got weaker and weaker because there was nothing for them to eat. One day, a snail was sliding past a house that belonged to an old woman when it smelled porridge. ‘I’ll go inside and ask for some,’ it thought. But nobody was there. The snail was so hungry that it climbed into the bowl and started to eat. But the porridge was so thick that the snail could not crawl out again!
Soon the old woman came home and found the snail in her porridge! She was not angry because she understood how hungry the snail must be. She put the snail on the ground outside her house. But the old woman hadn’t cleaned the porridge off the snail; so it could not move. The snail tried to clean off all the porridge but it couldn’t. ‘What can I do?’ said the snail, and stayed there unable to move. Soon, his friend, the caterpillar came along. ‘What’s the matter?’ he asked. ‘Why are you covered with mud?’ The snail did not want to tell its friend that it stole porridge, so it said, ‘I’m playing a game and I must have this mud on me.
The caterpillar crawled away. The poor snail was left with porridge inside its shell. Since that time, snails move very slowly – and they always leave a trail that looks like porridge.

Structure: A memorable football match
The football match I remember best was the one between the Super Eagles of Nigeria Africa Cup of Nations. It seemed that the whole of Nigeria watched that game on
television! Everyone was very excited. Teams. The referee blew his whistle at exactly 4.30 p.m. and the game began. On the Lions had scored their second goal, bringing the score to two-nil. Everyone was sad and the spectators were quiet – but we never lost hope. During the second half, the Super Eagles played fast and accurate football and they were rewarded were very happy and we all stood up round the television and cheered with our hands in the air. The spectators in the stadium sang our popular song: ‘All we are saying, is give us more goals!’ There was an even louder celebration when the Super Eagles scored their second goal in the dying minutes of the second half, bringing the score to two-all. The Super Eagles had equalised with the Indomitable Lions! The referee blew his whistle.
To determine the winner, the match went into extra time but neither the Eagles nor the Lions managed to score. According to the rules, if there is no winner after extra time, the winner is decided through a penalty shoot-out. The Lions lost one penalty kick but the Eagles lost two. And so the Indomitable Lions won the cup. It was a sad day for Nigeria, although the Super Eagles did win the silver medal. All the players said they would try very hard to win the Africa Cup of Nations the next time.
