Initially, the people of the ancient Ghana Empire practised traditional religion before Islam became widespread. They worshipped various gods whom they thought were responsible for their growth and prosperity. The worship of animate and inanimate objects was very predominant. Sacrifices were also offered to the gods to solicit favour, and when the people were in dire need. Many festivals and ceremonies were also initiated to appreciate, celebrate and appease their gods for providing things such as rain, abundant harvest, progress, war victories, and trade success. etc.
