Acids

An acid is a substance which when dissolved in water produces hydrogen ions, as the only positive ions. e.g.

HCl ⇌ H+ + Cl-

HNO3⇌ H+ + NO3‑

This process is known as ionization.The characteristic properties of acid are due to the presence of these hydrogen ions.
