A. Different roles of members of the family Eph6:1-9, 5:21-33, Col3:18-21, 1Peter3:1-7
When we talk of different roles of the family members, we refer to the duties each member of the family is expected to fulfil.
The bible has spelt out the roles of each member of a family. It stated what each family member is expected to do and also specify the children’s roles, their rights and privileges.
Duties of the Husband
1. The husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church.
2. The husband should love his wife as Christ loves the church.
3. He should love his wife as he loves his own body.
4. He is the chief disciplinarian in the home.
5. The husband id the breadwinner of the family. Therefore, he must provide for his wife and children.
Duties of the wife
1. The wife is to be submissive to her husband as she does to the lord.
2. She is to love her husband.
3. She is to respect her husband and give him recognition as the head of the home.
4. The wife is to assist the husband in the spiritual development of their children and home.
Duties of the Children
1. Children are to respect their parents as the Lord because this is right.
2. They should honour their father and mother.
3. They should listen to their parents’ instruction and be attentive all the time, accord to Proverbs 4:1.
4. Children should not provoke their parents.
B. Concept of good family name Proverbs 22:1, Eccl.17:1
A good name can also mean integrity. It is about the family reputation and the character they possess inside. It identifies if you are from a moral and ethical standpoint, it is what makes the family.
Proverbs 22:1, ‘a good name is to be chosen rather than great riches’ this is because good name brings stability in the family; when you have a good name people can trust you. A good name is eternal; riches are fleeting, they could be with us one minute and gone the next as we cannot take riches with us when we die but a good name will live forever as a legacy.
A good name brings loving favour; the end part of proverbs 22:1 says, ‘loving favour rather than silver and gold.’ This is because people will love you for having integrity.
Moral lesson
A good name is better than gold and riches. Therefore, we must prevent our names from being tarnished.
