Meaning of Rights

Rights are privileges every citizen enjoys in a country.

Citizens are entitled to the following rights:

1. Right to life

2. right to personal liberty

3. Rights to a fair hearing

4. Right to freedom of expression and movement

5. Right to vote and be voted for, Right to acquire and own property etc.

The rights of a citizen go with responsibilities. that is wherever it is right, there is a corresponding duty. Duties are responsibilities a citizen is expected to perform for the effective functioning of a state.

Duties and obligations of citizens

1. Payment of taxes and rates: Every citizen is expected to pay tax and levies at the appropriate time.

2. Voting during an election: citizens are expected to exercise their voting rights during elections.

3. National service: A good citizen should respond to the call to serve his country. E.g. national youth service corps.

4. Reporting of criminals: citizens should report lawbreakers or any act of lawlessness to the police.
