All living organisms (both plants and animals) need food substances for their survival and daily activities. All living organisms derive energy needed for growth and basic functioning of the organism from food substances. Plants are called autotrophs because they manufacture their food through photosynthesis. Animals on their own cannot manufacture their food directly and so depend on plants and they are called heterotrophs.
