Meaning of drug trafficking

Drug trafficking is a business of buying and selling of hard drugs illegally.

It can also be defined as the illicit or illegal movement or trading of drugs from one place to another.

Drug trafficking is the transferring or carrying of drugs especially hard drugs from where they are produced to where they will be consumed.

Examples of hard drugs are cocaine, marijuana, heroin, methamphetamines etc. 

Punishment for drug trafficking

The severity of the penalties usually depends on what type of drug or controlled substance is being trafficked.

In Nigeria, according to the constitution Decree No. 20 of 1984, the punishment for drug trafficking was the death penalty. However, due to public

the outcry, the law was adjusted to between ten years and life imprisonment depending on the offence.

Other punishments for offenders are’

a. Confiscation of the hard drugs

b. Burning of the hard drugs in the presence of the drug barons

c. Jail term or imprisonment of being behind bars for ten years without option of fine.
