Problems associated with irrigation

1. Irrigation increases weed competition.

2. It increases build-up and spread of pests and diseases.

3. Improperly managed irrigation can cause soil erosion/flooding.

4. It increases salinity (salt accumulation) which becomes toxic to crop plant.

5. Insufficient water supply.

6. High cost of equipment.

7. High cost of maintenance.

8. Inadequate technical know-how.

9. Damage of water pipes.

10. Blockage of underground irrigation water pipes.

11. Displacement of people through the construction of irrigation channels.
