Matrices and Determinants

Performance Objectives

Students should be able to:

  1. Perform transformations using the appropriate matrices of transformation
  2. Evaluate determinants

Content

One major area of application of matrices is in the area of linear transformation which is one-one mapping of a point called the object in a plant into a point called the image in the plane. An object can undergo any of the following transformations:

  1. Rotation
  2. Enlargement or reduction
  3. Reflection
  4. Shear
  5. Stretch

Rotation

Consider the transformation of a unit square under rotation of +90o about the origin. If we denote the mapping as Matrices and Determinants , then

T:A→A'Matrices and Determinants  or TA=A'Matrices and Determinants

We can write the co-ordinate of O, A, B Matrices and Determinants and C
