  2. Identify the coefficient of a given algebraic expression.
  3. Identify the positive and negative coefficients of a given algebraic term.
  4. Perform basic arithmetic operations on expression of similar terms.
  5. Solve related word problems.
  6. Insert/remove brackets.
  7. Solve quantitative problems on the use of brackets.

Content.

Example 1: Simplify 3p+4p-2p

3p+4p-2p

7p-2p=5p.

Coefficient of p is +5.

Example 2:abc+bac+cab-bca-acb

3abc-2abc=abc.

PERIOD 2.

Collecting Like Terms and removing Brackets.

Example 1: Remove bracket and simplify 2a+3(a+5)

2a+3(a+5)

2a+3a+15

5a+15.

Example 2: 12x(5y-8)+2(6x-12xy)

60xy-96x+12x-24xy

60xy-24xy-96x+12x.

36xy-84x.

Negative coefficient of x is -84.
